A Motor Performance Test for Students Ages 4.6 to 17 Years

AAPAR is transitioning to a new online version of APEAS II

Building on the tremendous success of the original Adapted Physical Education Assessment Scale II (APEAS II), the new portable APEAS II Online has enhanced features that take the user experience to the next level.   The APEAS II Online features include:

Anywhere your web browser goes APEAS II Online goes with it.  It is compatible with any device that has a web browser such as laptops, tablets, and smart phones.

  • Not sure how to conduct an assessment, APEAS II Online includes video tutorials for all of the assessments that guide you through the proper way to conduct the assessment.
  • Through its secure, online encrypted database, you can store data on each assessment, on each student, and you will be able to review the data periodically throughout the school year and over multiple years making charting student progress significantly easier.  In addition, the student’s data can follow them as they progress to different schools within your district.
  • Enhanced reporting features will enable you to easily generate reports for your student’s IEP and generate a parent-friendly letter.

APEAS II Online uses the same scientific foundation of the original APEAS II, it simply packages it in a way that is much more user friendly.

We are currently accepting pre-orders at www.aapar.org.  APEAS II Online is $179 and will be available on March 1, 2012.

All current APEAS customers will be grandfathered in to the new APEAS II Online format for three years!

Please visit www.aapar.org for more details.”

Adapted Physical Education Assessment Scale Elementary and Secondary
Revised Edition

The Adapted Physical Education Assessment Scale-II (APEAS II) is the major revision of a test used for over 25 years. While the test is based on scores of students in the general school population, its greatest use has been to identify students to receive special education services in adapted physical education.

The APEAS II was developed by the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation (AAPAR) in cooperation with the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The test measures four (4) areas of motor performance and Adaptive Behaviors—those behaviors that, in spite of adequate motor performance, limit a student’s ability to safely and successfully participate in general physical education. The test measures:

  • Perceptual Motor Function
  • Object Control
  • Locomotor Skills
  • Physical Fitness
  • Adaptive Behaviors

The Adapted Physical Education Assessment Scale-II (APEAS II) is the revision of a test used for over 25 years in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). It was developed after the passage of PL 94-142—the Education of All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (now IDEA ’07).

The purpose was to establish a test that could be used to determine if a student’s motor performance was so far off the norm that he or she required special programming—modified, specially designed or adapted physical education. While the test is based on scores of students in the general school population, it greatest use has been to identify students to receive special education services in adapted physical education.

The revision has been a 3 year project with an effort to enlist the help of data collectors from across the country. In addition, the 70 itinerant adapted physical educators of LAUSD tested students across the district. Whereas data are included nationally, the number of subjects tested has not met expectations. Therefore, the project team will continue to seek data to be included until the number of approximately 7,900 is reached. Currently, approximately 2,300 data sets have been included across all age groups.

Originally, twenty-five items for the elementary test and 22 items for the secondary test were selected from a pool of test items sampling motor performance in the four performance areas mentioned above. An expert panel was assembled to revise the test:

  • Janet A. Seaman, original designer of the test and Executive Director of AAPAR (since retired)
  • Cyndi Martinich, Coordinator, Adapted Physical Education, LAUSD
  • Connie Fox, Professor, Northern Illinois University, statistics & measurement
  • Diane Larrabee, Specialist, Adapted Physical Education, LAUSD
  • Karen Hentoff, Assessment Specialist, Adapted Physical Education, LAUSD
  • Dan Cariaga, Adapted Physical Education Specialist, San Luis Obispo County Office Of Education, CA; (original APEAS II Software Developer)

The items were reviewed for practicality, ease of administration and efficiency of equipment and facility use. Some experimental items were included and alternate equipment used on some items to improve the efficiency of the test. The APEAS II has two levels—elementary and secondary. The Elementary Level test consists of 23 items measuring motor performance. The Secondary Level test consists of 20 performance items. Both tests also measure height and weight—converted to body mass index—BMI and adaptive behaviors.
